Does anyone recall the TV show Flip This ownHouse? A&E aired this series for a few seasons back in the mid-2000s. My favorite season was the one that followed a real estate company in South Carolina as they discovered and revamped dilapidated houses for profit. In my young 20’s, I aspired to work for Richard after completing my interior design degree – that’s why it intrigued me. However, my husband Roger and I, newlyweds at the time, had limited money and no means to start flipping houses.
To satisfy my passion for house flipping, we worked on our own home. We bought a very small house and gradually renovated it, starting with flooring removal, painting, and utilizing the limited funds we had. This led to a kitchen renovation, and when we learned we were expecting our first daughter, we decided to finish the basement. I vividly remember being pregnant on a ladder, assisting Roger in hanging drywall. We did all the taping and texturing and painting ourselves in a rush before our baby arrived. We poured our effort and emotions into the entire house.
This small home served its purpose for us, and as our family expanded, so did our home. Before welcoming our son, We added an addition and extended the kitchen and dining area, added a master suite. Making a total of 3 bedrooms vs 2.
We quickly learned By investing our own sweat equity, we accrued a substantial amount of equity in the house, guiding us to to sell and pursue a building a new home, marking the beginning of a design-build-flip business that we never seen coming for our future.
