Designer Advice

These are all the things I consider when designing a new home!

Number 3 is what makes me inspired with a home! Lighting often gets overlooked. But it’s what can personalize your space and make it all come together.

Number 8 is what I feel sets us apart in the building industry . As a designer, I am able to imagine how a family will use their space and make sure it’s functional now the floor plan will work with furniture as well!

  1. Understand the purpose and function of the space: Before starting any design project, it’s important to have a clear understanding of how the space will be used. This will help inform your design decisions and ensure that the space is functional and meets the needs of the family.
  2. Create a cohesive color scheme: Choose a color palette that reflects the desired mood and atmosphere of the space. Consider the use of complementary colors, contrasting colors, or a monochromatic scheme to create visual interest and harmony.
  3. Pay attention to lighting: Lighting plays a crucial role in interior design. Consider both natural and artificial lighting sources to ensure that the space is well-lit and that the lighting enhances the overall ambiance. Incorporate a mix of task lighting, ambient lighting, and accent lighting to create layers of light.
  4. Consider the scale and proportion: Ensure that the furniture and decorative elements in the space are appropriately scaled to the size of the room. Avoid overcrowding or leaving large empty spaces. Aim for a balanced and harmonious arrangement that allows for comfortable movement and flow.
  5. Use texture and patterns: Incorporate different textures and patterns to add visual interest and depth to the space. Mix materials such as wood, metal, glass, and fabrics to create a layered and tactile environment.
  6. Create focal points: Designate a focal point in each room to draw attention and create a sense of visual interest. This could be a statement piece of furniture, an artwork, a fireplace, or a unique architectural feature.
  7. Pay attention to details: Small details can make a big difference in design. Consider the selection of decorative accessories, such as throw pillows, rugs, artwork, and plants, to add personality and style to the space.
  8. Consider the flow and layout: Ensure that the layout of the space promotes easy movement and functionality. Arrange furniture in a way that allows for clear pathways and facilitates conversation and interaction.
  9. Incorporate storage solutions: Effective storage is essential in maintaining a clean and organized space. Consider incorporating built-in storage options, such as shelves or cabinets, to keep clutter to a minimum.
  10. Personalize the space: Finally, don’t be afraid to inject your own personality and style into the design. Add personal touches, such as family photos, artwork, or heirlooms, to create a space that feels uniquely yours.

My Favorite Room in the House

My husband I built our current house about 3 years ago. When we were deciding on a floor plan, I paid close attention to the kitchen space. Kitchens are my favorite place in any house. Its where I spend most of my time at home. I love to cook, and I cook almost every night. Except Fridays, I like Fridays off.

A large island was my number one priority, and plenty of cabinet space. Our house prior to this one had very little cabinet space. I clearly remember unpacking and sitting there on the floor and wondering what am I going to do with all of my stuff? This kitchen is packed with storage. I no longer have to store my kitchen items in an entry room closet.

Kitchens are not just my favorite place to hang out, they are my favorite room to design. Choosing our cabinet style was easy, but my husband and I couldn’t agree on a wood choice. So we compromised and did two. The island is a statement with the grey stain, chosen by my husband, and I got my warm stained maple cabinets.

I have to say, every morning I come down to the kitchen and I truly appreciate it. Especially when the aroma of coffee fills the room!

Kitchen Bliss – Cliqstudios

My favorite part of any home design process has to be the kitchen! I love how families gather in the kitchen for meals, conversations, holidays, and cooking. For this kitchen, I decided to do some researching on what my options were other than the big box stores. I wanted something different, and I wanted to be in budget. When I came across https://www.cliqstudios.com/ I was intrigued. After getting sample cabinets and a quick quote, I decided to give them a try.

Working with their designers was a perk! They not only do this every day, but they are educated about the product lines. I was able to collaborate with my designer, Myisha, and we came up with a great design. She was quick to get back to me with any questions I may have had, and gave the project her full attention.

I am so pleased with the final results. The shaker style cabinets give the kitchen a classic feel, but the Studio Grey painted finish adds a modern touch. We added classic subway tile as a back splash and quartz countertops for a sleek look. All the doors and drawers have soft touch hinges, which you don’t always find in cabinets. This gives the cabinets such a high-end touch. The kitchen cabinets have a lot of drawers, because I love how they function for storage.

The kitchen island is my favorite. It is also topped off with a beautiful quartz countertop. It is a nice large size to give a family a casual eating area, and also plenty of space to prep food. I can also see this space as a dumping ground for after school backpacks, homework space, or an art studio area for playdoh or water colors!

I can’t wait for a family to enjoy this kitchen!
